Movie Review of Nim's Island

That is Nim swimming with her sea lion, Selkie. Where the movie takes place is an island and her dad is a scientist. He is going to do some research for two days and he leaves Nim alone on the island. All alone. Her father tells her, "No parties!" But she disobeys and has a party with Selkie and Fred the bearded dragon lizard (he's tiny). Galileo is her pelican, flying in the sky.

While her dad is gone, some people try to invade the island. Nim says to Selkie, "This is our island! No one will touch our sand. When my dad gets back, I will tell him we protected this island!" People are on a cruise ship and there are four captains leading four boats to the island. Selkie comes and tries to chase them away by making toots in the water to make it smell like rotten dead fish. [Blogging interrupted by uproarious laughter.] It doesn't chase the people away but Nim says quietly, "You did your best, Selkie." Then Nim says, "Fred, call to your friends." He goes, "BAAAAA!" which is "Help!" in lizard. Nim has lots of baskets tied to big rubber bands and she puts the lizards in the baskets and launches the lizards and they go, "BAAAA!" as they fly in the air at the tourists and land on them.

Then Nim climbs up to the volcano and sets a fire to make the people think it's going to erupt. And they run off to the boats and some trip on lizards on the sand.

Nim gets a five-inch cut but don't worry, she heals. And the writer Alexandra Rover, the author of Alex Rover books, comes to rescue Nim because she's all alone. She tells Nim, "I'm Alex Rover." Nim was expecting a man. And then Alexandra says, "Alexandra Rover...the writer!"
Later in the movie Alexandra Rover gets frightened by a flying lamp, but it's Nim holding a lamp on a standing zipline.

Alexandra brought a can of soup with her but the sea lion, Selkie, ate it! During their dinner,
Alexandra asks, "How long has your father been gone?" Nim replies, "Four days."

Then Nim cries because she doesn't see her dad coming back. It ends happily; he comes back and they become a family.

I think you should watch it. It is at Redbox video machines. Since there is a volcano and Nim gets cut, you should be about eight to forty-four to watch this movie. I think you'll enjoy it.

Grass Sledding!

I have a huge hill outside my house. A couple of weeks ago there was snow. There wasn't much snow but we decided to go sledding anyway. We didn't have much luck at all; mostly we sledded on grass! But it was fun anyway.

Mama Post: December 15

Carlyn has been planning to share a video we made at the San Diego Zoo last month. She's been so busy with school, the church Christmas program and her usual activities, that I decided to post it for her.

Accelerated Reader at my School

AR is the most fun time of all at my school. I read a book twice, then a take a test. Mrs. Gilliam types in the name of the book. I use the computer and it asks me questions. For instance, if you test on Duck for President, it would ask you, "What's the name of the farmer?" It would give you choices like:

A. Cow Brown
B. Mr. Jones
C. Farmer Brown
D. Farmer Black

And then you have to click on the answer you think is right. But no peeking in the book!

I get points every time I pass a test. Right now, I think I have about 25 points and when I get one more point, I get a prize. Hunter and I are racing. He's a boy. We're racing to get the t-shirt prizes. You get those when you get to 35 AR points.

To get one AR point, you have to get 100% on two AR tests.

Today, I took a test on Teach Us, Amelia Bedelia. I only read it one time; I was a little sneaky about that. But we're supposed to read it two times! But I got 100%!

A Hayride and Halloweeeeeen!

I went to the Berry's house for a party. They had a hayride. It was pulled behind a John Deere tractor. When I looked on the tire, there was some cow poop on it! The hayride was so long, I couldn't believe my eyes. We went into the cow pasture; there were lots of cows. I tried to feed them some straw, but I couldn't reach them.

This is a swing at the Berry's house.
We had a good time at Halloween. In my town, we can go trick-or-treating at the park. They have fire truck rides, a hay ride and trick-or-treating. I was Wordgirl; there's a post about Wordgirl already on my blog. My favorite candy was Dum Dum suckers, Tootsie Rolls, gum and M & M's.

This is Wordgirl! Captain Huggyface is sitting on my feet.

This is my friend, Maddie and me on the Berry's hayride.

Jumping the Waves

In April, I traveled about 10 hours to get to Savannah with my mom and the college students. It was paradise!

At the Marriott they gave me a book called Scampering Through Savannah. It's about two raccoons who scamper through Savannah while the parents are taking a nap. I like the book. I think you should read it. My mom will post the link. http://onwordspublishing.com/

In this picture, I'm jumping the waves at Tybee Island, close to Savannah and in Georgia, the same state as Savannah's in. The water was c-c-c-c-cold! My mom found a sand dollar but I was a little nervous about the sand dollar because it was scary to see one for the first time in my life. Mom was holding me in the water. She reached down to get the sand dollar on the bottom. I said, "I like the shore better."

I think you should visit Savannah.

A-maze-ing!

The name of the girl with me is Anna. She's the one with no sleeves. She was born in China like me, the one who owns this blog. We are in a maze at the Pumpkin Farm. We're playing "following the leader." I got to be the leader.

Thank you for visiting this post. Bye!

Word Up!

Wordgirl is a character on PBS. She comes on at 4:30. She is really Becky Boxford and she becomes Wordgirl to stop crime. I would like to make up a middle name for her. It would be one that's really tricky: Kally.

She has a monkey sidekick. His name is Bob when he's a regular monkey and he wears a diaper. If I gave him a middle name it would be Funny. When he's fighting crime his name is Captain Huggyface. He likes to eat when he's fighting crime. He eats bananas ala Boxford! He drives Wordgirl up the wall! Some criminals think he's a rat but Huggy is a monkey, not a rat!

I'm going to be Wordgirl for Halloween!!! Yay!

Soccer Day

I am on a soccer team. There are six kids. We like to play. Hollis is very good; I wish I was as good as Hollis. I have scored a goal at every game, though.

On the left is Gracie; she can kick HARD! Trevor is next to her; he's kind of funny. That's me who owns the blog next! Finally is Hollis. He looks a little grumpy here.

We have oranges in our mouths because Trevor's mom brought them.

Pumpkin Farm

Once I went to a pumpkin farm. If you notice what Daddy's doing, he's pretending to throw a football with a pumpkin! The girl who looks Chinese is Meiping. She's from China. She's a student at the college where Mama teaches. Mama is in the blue shirt. I enjoyed picking out a huge pumpkin. It cost $16 because it weighed 40 pounds! The other pumpkin only cost about $2. It weighed around 4 pounds.
The pumpkin farm is called Baldwin Farms. Mama will post the link. http://www.baldwinfarmsky.com/

Mama Post: September 19

Carlyn has made an endorsement in the Presidential race.
I came home from work yesterday to find 7 copies of this sign taped to the front door.

Carlyn's readers are free to speculate about which parent was delighted and which was appalled.

Weekend Scones!

On the weekends, we like to make scones.

It looks like I'm saying, "I WON THIS!"
There will be seven steps to making scones. Step one: put the butter in the microwave but first, chop it up. Step two: add the milk. Step three: mix the scones. Step four: eat the chips. Step five: mix in some food coloring. Step six: make it into little circles. Finale – Step seven: eat the dough and put some in the oven, but save some for yourself. You can dye it, you can sprinkle it, you can even make it different shapes and sizes. Enjoy!
Today's scones were teal and pretty purple. I used dye.
CARLYN'S SCONES
1/3 cup butter
1 ¾ cups flour
3 tablespoons sugar
2 ½ teaspoons baking powder
½ teaspoon salt
1 beaten egg
4 or 5 tablespoons milk or half-and-half
½ cup chocolate chips, peanut butter chips, or mixture
Food coloring

First Day of First Grade!

This is my school.
My teacher is Mrs. Gilliam. I LOVE her! She does cartwheels when we are good! And she gives us candy when we're good, like if we walk good in the line.

My mom took this picture on the first day of school. I'm cracked up because one of the photos ended up showing Toulouse's bum! Toulouse is my boy cat; he's the cat in this picture.

The Pegasus Post

This is my horse, Pegasus. He is my favorite stuffed horse and I really love him. That's why I want to you to see him. This picture is him and me sitting in our stairway.

Pegasus is a good horse. If you come to my house, I can show you the tricks he does.

My Auntie Lynne gave him to me.

My father tells me Pegasus stories; Peggy comes from Fairy Tale Land.

Book Review

Horseland: Back in the Saddle Again

Horseland is a TV show that comes on at 8:30 on Saturday mornings. I really like it and you should watch it; it's on CBS Kewlopolis. http://http://www.kewlopolis.com/shows/horseland

On this show there are five girls and two boys.
There are books about Horseland. Today I will review Horseland: Back in the Saddle Again, http://www.amazon.com/Horseland-Back-Saddle-Again/dp/0061341681 but you should watch the TV show first, and if you don't like it, just turn the TV off.

In this book, once there was a girl named Molly who sat in the saddle with her heels down and looked straight ahead. She tried to jump the small fence but she fell out of the saddle. Sarah, another Horseland girl, said to Molly, "I once had a super-bad fear... You have to face your fears." Then they went for a walk. Sarah reminded her that riding was easy, but Scarlet, her horse, had colick, a horse illness. Sarah cried on her horse while she laid down on the ground. She said, "Molly, please go get help." Molly and her horse, Calypso, went for help.

The vet came to Sarah and Scarlet in the pasture. The six kids sat on the fence; Chloe sat backwards and then she tipped over into the horse trough. Alma, another Horseland girl, said, "Hey, Chloe, was that one of your fears?" Then Chloe peeked up from the trough. The kids giggled.

And Scarlet was okay.

I like the story because it shows that Sarah is kind, gentle and cares about horses. I think you should read it. Parents can read it to their children who are old enough, of course. It would be a good book for seven to seventeen-year-olds.

Carlyn & the Cousins

I love my cousins.
I love Meagan. I love Kayla. They are Bonnie and Gordon's children. They are teenagers right now and they have lots of fun. I also love Ryan and Emily and Sarah. I was in Ryan and Emily's wedding. I was a flowergirl.
And I love Allison and Brendon. I visited them at Steamboat Island. I remember I rode in a kayak.
I have a cousin, John, and I have a cousin, Dax who has kids: Natalie, Nicholas and Chelsea.
And I have Colorado and California cousins. I love Nisha, Gavin, Ian and Rachel.

Carlyn & the Steers

These are my uncle's steers. A steer is a boy cow who cannot have babies. In this picture, I am at my grandma's farm. We feed pellets to the steers.

Welcome!

Hello!
My name is Carlyn and this is my blog.
I'm so glad you're visiting me.
I will write about dogs, horses and animals. My mom will type for me, but I'll tell her what to say.
Bye!
Carlyn
